Huffman High School’s first three classes graduated in 1970, 1971, and 1972. We began as a small school because the system was adding a grade per year. (For example, during our freshman year there were around 400 students enrolled.) By the time our class graduated in ’71, the school probably had close to 1500 students.

For our 9th-grade year, there was a handful of black teachers; by the time we graduated, the faculty was integrated at a court-ordered 50%. We don’t recall any overt racial incidents.

The formula seemed to be the same all along: If teachers were weak and/or incompetent, we took advantage of them. If they were good at their craft, we were pretty sedate.
